Ten of the eleven songs on SPORT’s second album from Lyon are named after deceased athletes. Their ’90s-style emo in the vein of Braid and Cap’n Jazz shines through its powerful execution. The intro alone—blending a sample from the coming-of-age classic Stand by Me with melancholic guitar interplay—is enchanting and leads straight into the rousing opener “Reggie Lewis.”
While other emo bands sink into lethargy, SPORT remain dynamic, euphoric, and utterly captivating. Hard to describe, but a true stroke of genius.
